Your Pollen Pal

Around one in five people in the UK suffer from pollen-related allergies — a condition that recurs every year, often with a significant impact on their quality of life. Yet despite the size of this audience, digital tools that support allergy sufferers remain surprisingly limited, with many offering only generic information or lacking the personalisation needed to help users manage their symptoms in a meaningful way.

Kleenex, the Kimberly-Clark brand trusted by millions, already had a strong presence in this space through its hyper-local pollen tracking website. With a growing archive of educational content and a dedicated user base, the platform provided daily support to thousands. But as mobile usage surged and user expectations evolved, there was a clear opportunity to transform the pollen experience into something more responsive, personal, and embedded in people’s daily routines.

Following the success of PRELOADED’s award-winning work on Andrex’s “Go-Time” app, the Kimberly-Clark team re-engaged PRELOADED to help reimagine the Kleenex pollen offering for a mobile-first world — one that could better meet the everyday needs of allergy sufferers across the UK.

During hay fever season I live by this app. It’s the most accurate one that I’ve used. I arrange my day and activities around its readings for morning, afternoon and evening.

Reimagining Pollen Pal as a Native App

PRELOADED collaborated closely with the Kleenex team to design and develop a completely new version of Pollen Pal, built natively for both iOS and Android. At its core, the new app preserved the trusted data and functionality of the original website, but layered in smart new features and a best-in-class user experience to give people greater agency over their health.

Users could now check forecasts for their current location as well as any other location that mattered to them — such as their workplace, their children’s school, or a planned holiday. The app made it easy to distinguish between different types of pollen — tree, grass, and weed — helping people better understand which allergens were likely to affect them. Daily notifications ensured users would never be caught out by rising pollen levels, while a five-day forecast helped them plan ahead with confidence.

To deepen personal relevance, the app included an allergy quiz and symptom tracker, designed to help users identify their unique allergy triggers. This personal data then powered tailored alerts — ensuring users only received notifications when it truly mattered to them.

A Human-Centred Redesign

This was far more than a reskin — it was a complete rethink of the Pollen Pal experience, redesigned from the ground up to be more responsive, intuitive, and emotionally resonant.

The onboarding process was simplified to help users quickly personalise their setup. The interface was streamlined and easy to navigate, with key insights never more than a tap away. A refreshed visual identity — rooted in a calming, accessible colour palette and clear visual language — ensured the app felt both practical and supportive. These design choices weren’t just aesthetic; they were central to building trust with users who turn to Kleenex at moments of discomfort or vulnerability.

Delivering Results That Matter

The new Pollen Pal app was met with widespread praise and quickly became a valued companion during allergy season. On the App Store, it achieved an impressive 4.2-star rating, with many users describing it as an “essential” part of their daily health toolkit. On Google Play, the app surpassed 100,000 downloads, demonstrating strong user demand and market visibility.

For Kimberly-Clark, the success of Pollen Pal marked a significant step forward in delivering on their brand promise — transforming a seasonal utility into a proactive, personalised health tool that people return to, day after day.

The 5-day forecast is really useful. Knowing the best times to go outside or visit other parts of the country is a game-changer for me.
