Smashteroid

Meta recently unveiled Meta Horizon Engine, built to power the next chapter of its mobile strategy. PRELOADED was invited to put it through its paces. The result is Smashteroid: an action-packed, fast-to-fun game with progression that keeps players coming back.

Getting there meant building a strong foundational core suited to mobile play, then pushing into everything the new engine could do.

Mobile-First Design

In Smashteroid, you control a destructive ball of chaos that crash-lands on Earth and wreaks havoc. Smash as much as you can. Rack up the highest score.

We doubled down on the ingredients that make a great mobile game: instant fun and short loops, backed by clear power progression.

The premise is simple. The gameplay is fast and frantic, with a satisfying core loop and progression that keeps you coming back for “just one more” play. Have you got what it takes to top the leaderboard?

What the Engine Made Possible

  • Enhanced graphics: Particles and shaders raise the visual fidelity.
  • Physics play: Better physics unlocks richer destruction effects, and the game feel to match.
  • Portrait native: Built from the ground up for portrait play, with one-touch controls for a quick Smashteroid fix on the go.
  • Improved performance: A more efficient engine means more complex environments running buttery smooth on mobile.
  • Faster loading times: Sublevels split loading across assets, so you jump in and play faster.
  • Noesis UI: Custom fonts, layouts and animation gave us the freedom to build a UI that feels entirely our own.
  • Optimised workflows: Source control kept collaboration smooth, and prefabs kept the game’s structure organised, so iteration moved faster.

Smashteroid is available on Horizon Worlds now.
