SuperMe

Channel 4

Goals

One of the main aims for Channel 4 Education is to help children through the difficulties of growing up and equip them with the tools to get through the ups and downs of uncertain times.

As part of this remit, Channel 4 Education initially commissioned research carried out by Somethin' Else to look into teen mental health and happiness, looking at subject areas which included the biology and physiology of happiness, states of being, positive psychology, resilience, autonomy, relatedness and competence.

This research went on to become the foundation to the commission which aims to reach disillusioned and unhappy teens and provide help and life experience advice through engaging interactive online content.

Solution

SuperMe is an online experience which takes users on a journey of self-belief and discovery as they move through a hub site, watching videos, reading factoids and quotes and playing immersive games whilst answering questions about themselves, their strengths and weaknesses.

The site also features video content of celebrities and sports stars who have all experienced problems in their lives and careers, including Sean Wright Philips and Richard Bacon.

Working in collaboration with Somethin' Else, we developed the game content which would appeal to teens and provide positive engagement.

Early stages of the project included workshops with local schools, gathering input and gaining understanding in what they were interested in. Workshops were conducted by Tassos Stevens from Coney, and the learnings and feedback were fed back into the brief.

Somethin' Else developed the video content, the hub and online quizzes, all designed to work together with positive messaging.

Central to SuperMe is a suite of games, each of which was designed to help illustrate and underline the fundamental principles of resilience, flow and teamwork. Games include:

  • Flomo, which encourages players to get into the flow and build up 'ability points'.
  • Linkem, which shows how making strong connections in life is a way to a happier future.
  • Proximity, a multiplayer game where working together is the goal.
  • Swerveball, where you score additional points if you can reflect accurately on how you're playing.

The games will also be available on a number of platforms and syndicated across other web properties including MiniClip and Kongregate to increase awareness and reach and provide new jumping off points to access the rest of the content.

Results

As SuperMe is newly launched there are no meaningful stats to share, however the syndication seeding strategy is likely to generate strong response stats from the target audience.
